Online Rules Beyond Gateway Casinos Sudbury

Ontario runs a regulated online gambling market, and its legal sites appear on a public list kept by iGaming Ontario. This page answers the usual questions about that market and explains how the paid links on this guide work.

01

How the regulated market works

On April 4, 2022, a regulated market for online gambling opened in Ontario. Private operators each run their own sites, and iGaming Ontario conducts and manages what they offer online. The AGCO regulates that market. A private online casino operates legally in Ontario only once the AGCO registers it and iGaming Ontario signs an operating agreement with it.

OLG.ca stands apart from the private operators. It is Ontario's government-run online casino. A reader in Greater Sudbury can therefore meet two kinds of legal online casino site. One is the government-run site, and the others are private sites that meet both conditions above. BetGuard, covered below, also includes OLG.ca in its exclusions.

02

Checking a site and opting out

One official list names the regulated online gambling sites: the iGaming Ontario directory at igamingontario.ca. Online play is 19+. The player must be physically inside Ontario to play, so a Sudbury resident travelling outside the province cannot play there.

BetGuard (betguard.ca), an iGaming Ontario service, lets anyone 19+ self-exclude in one step from every Ontario-regulated online gambling site, OLG.ca included. Land-based casinos are not covered, so the casino on Bonin Road falls outside it. OLG runs My PlayBreak for casino self-exclusion. For 1 to 5 years, 6 months or 3 months, the break bars entry at all Ontario casinos and cannot end sooner. To enrol, ask casino staff or dial 1-800-387-0098 for the OLG Support Centre.

How this guide is paid

Each paid link in this guide sits on the home page and carries the Ad label. The links occupy three spots: the menu, the area beneath the first screen and the section close to the end. Each one sends readers to a privately run online casino partner that stays unnamed here and can be replaced. Those links bring the guide a commission.

The partner is not checked by this desk. Readers should look up any online casino in the official provincial directory of regulated sites, linked above. Neither the venue on Bonin Road nor its operator has any tie to the partner. No link to that venue, to provincial pages or to help services is ever paid.

Questions on this card set

Q.01

How can a reader confirm that an Ontario online casino is legal?

Look the site up in the iGaming Ontario directory, igamingontario.ca. It is the official list of the online gambling sites that hold regulated status. Legality for a private online casino comes only with two things: registration by the AGCO and an operating agreement concluded with iGaming Ontario.

Q.02

Can someone play on an Ontario site from outside the province?

No, a player must be physically in Ontario to play online. It is also limited to people 19 or older.

Q.03

Does BetGuard cover the casino in Chelmsford?

No, land-based casinos are outside BetGuard, which covers regulated Ontario online gambling sites. My PlayBreak is the self-exclusion program for the Bonin Road casino and every other casino in Ontario. To enrol, ask casino staff or phone 1-800-387-0098, the number of the OLG Support Centre.
